What happens during treatment
- Diagnosis – we examine the tooth and take x-rays to see the roots.
- Numbing – the tooth is fully numbed with local anaesthetic.
- Cleaning – we remove the infected or inflamed nerve and clean and shape the root canals.
- Sealing – the canals are filled and sealed to prevent re-infection.
- Restoring the tooth – most root-treated back teeth need a crown to protect them.
Root canal treatment may take more than one visit. Afterwards, we can often restore the tooth with a same-day CEREC crown – designed, made and fitted in one appointment.

Frequently asked questions
Is root canal treatment painful?
The tooth is numbed, so treatment should feel similar to having a filling. It is usually the infection, not the treatment, that causes pain – and treatment relieves it.
