We understand dental anxiety and offer oral sedation and IV sedation for anxious patients, helping make dental treatment a more comfortable and relaxed experience. At Dazzle Family Dental, our dentists and staff are qualified to provide sedation in line with the Dental Council of New Zealand guidelines.
Is sedation right for me?
Sedation may help if you:
- Feel anxious or scared about dental treatment
- Have had a difficult dental experience in the past
- Have a strong gag reflex or sensitive teeth
- Need a longer procedure, such as dental implants or wisdom teeth removal
- Have several treatments to complete in one visit
Our sedation options
Oral sedation
A tablet taken before your appointment to help you feel calm and relaxed. You stay awake and able to respond, but most people feel much more at ease.
IV sedation
Medication is given through a small drip in your arm or hand for a deeper level of relaxation. Many people remember little of the treatment afterwards.
Your dentist will talk you through which option suits you, your health and the treatment you need.
Sedation for children
For anxious children, we can provide sedation to help make treatment a calmer experience. For children treated under an ARDS referral, sedation is available at an extra cost. Free dental care for children under 13.
Before and after your appointment
We will give you clear instructions before your visit. After IV sedation you will need a responsible adult to take you home, and you should not drive for the rest of the day.
Frequently asked questions
Will I be asleep?
No. Sedation helps you feel relaxed and calm, but you stay conscious. With IV sedation, many people remember very little afterwards.
Is sedation safe?
Our team provides sedation in line with the Dental Council of New Zealand guidelines, and we check your medical history first to make sure it is right for you.
How much does sedation cost?
It depends on the type of sedation and your treatment. We will explain any costs before your appointment.
