Scale and polish
Even with good brushing and flossing, plaque and hard tartar build up in places that are hard to reach. A professional clean removes this build-up, polishes away surface stains and leaves your mouth feeling fresh. It also gives us a chance to spot early signs of gum disease.
Gum disease and periodontal treatment
When plaque builds up along the gum line, gums can become red, swollen and bleed easily (gingivitis). If it is not treated, the gums can pull away from the teeth, creating deeper pockets where plaque collects. This is called periodontal disease and can eventually loosen teeth.
Signs to look out for:
- Gums that bleed when you brush or floss
- Red, swollen or tender gums
- Bad breath that does not go away
- Gums that look like they are shrinking
- Teeth that feel loose
Periodontal treatment involves a deeper clean below the gum line to remove plaque and tartar from the pockets and help the gums heal. We will then recommend how often you should return to keep your gums healthy.
How often should I see the hygienist?
Most people benefit from a scale and polish every 6 to 12 months. If you have gum disease, we may recommend more frequent visits.

Most people find it comfortable. If your teeth or gums are sensitive, let us know and we can numb the area.
Will it make my teeth whiter?
A clean removes surface stains, so teeth often look brighter. For a bigger change in colour, ask about teeth whitening.
